Named after the mythical nymph Taygeti – daughter to the titan Atlas who was condemned by Zeus to hold up the heavens for all eternity – Taygetus is one of the tallest mountain ranges in Greece and its rugged terrain has long beckoned those with a sense of adventure, not least of which the warriors of ancient Sparta themselves who honed their craft under the mountain’s watchful shadow.
Today, those interested in exploring the forested slopes and rocky outcrops of the old mountain have a choice between different hiking trails of varying length and difficulty. For those keen on pushing their physical limits, the demanding hike up Mount Taygetus may be just the thing.
