Sfaktiria Island and the Bay of Navarino Mini-Cruise

Embark on a gorgeous mini-cruise that will take you around the historic Navarino Bay and the beautiful island of Sfaktiria.

The Bay of Navarino is justly famous as the theater where the naval Battle of Navarino took place in October of 1827. This battle marked a decisive turning point in the fortunes of the upstart Greek nation as the combined French, British and Russian allied fleets delivered a crushing defeat to their Otto-Egyptian counterparts, effectively crippling their ability to wage war at sea. A few years later, Greece would be formally recognized as an independent state with the Treaty of Constantinople in 1832. The Battle of Navarino clearly signaled the beginning of the end of Ottoman rule in the Peloponnese and the dawning of a new era of freedom and self determination for the people of Greece.

Combining the area’s rich history with its stunning natural beauty, during the course of this three hour cruise you will have the chance to explore interesting sites such as the monument to the fallen British officers and sailors on the islet of Chelonaki, as well as the striking Russian Orthodox church made entirely of wood on the island of Sfaktiria. You will also enjoy a refreshing dip into the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea and explore the beautiful local landscape. If the weather conditions permit it, you can also visit the fascinating volcanic cave located on the back end of Sfaktiria Island.
