Starting from the harbor of Pilos, you will first head to Proti Island that sits a mere stone’s throw away from the coastal town of Marathopoli. At the island, you can spend some time visiting the Greek orthodox monastery that sits at the center of the island before heading to the white, sandy beach of Vourlia a little further south. Here you can spend some time enjoying the tranquility of the area and swim in remarkably clear waters where you can make out the remains a 20th century shipwreck that rests at a depth of less than 5 meters. During your time in Proti you can also swing by Grammeno Bay to see some fascinating etchings made by passing sailors that date back to the postclassical era. Some of these where intended as a form of prayer, asking the gods for a safe voyage, while others intended to warn passersby of the pirates that used to frequent these waters in centuries past. Next, you will head to the sandy Voidokilia beach for some more quality time under the warm Greek sun.
