Discover the hidden treasures of the south Ionian Sea with a full day sailing trip that will take you around the mesmerizing bay of Navarino and the charming island of Sapientza. Starting from the harbor of Pilos, you will begin by sailing around the beautiful Navarino Bay and pay a visit to the island of Sfaktiria. Here you will find a small wooden chapel designed in the Russian Orthodox style that commemorates the Russian sailors who fell during the naval battle of Navarino. A moment of pivotal importance during the Greek War for Independence, the victory of the combined English, French and Russian allies against the combined Otto-Aegyptian fleet during the Battle of Navarino in 1827 turned the tide of the war in favor of the upstart Greeks who managed to achieve independence from Ottoman rule a few years later.
Next, you will head to the verdant island of Sapientza that sits just across the picturesque coastal town of Methoni. Upon dropping anchor at the island you can visit its famous lighthouse that was commissioned by Queen Victoria in the 1890s. At the center of the island you can explore a dense broadleaf evergreen forest that is unique both for its rare ecology and its extraordinary longevity, having crowned the island’s interior for the last 15.000 years! To the north there is a lovely, easily accessible sandy beach known as Ammos where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea.
